Frequently asked questions and policies

What if I need to cancel or reschedule my appointment?

If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please be sure to contact us at 814-933-5030 or emily@maebellebeauty.com no less than 24 hours before your appointment.

Failure to contact us 24 hours in advance may result in needing to put down an additional deposit if it is your first session appointment, or a $50 cancellation/no-show fee if it is your second session appointment.

***On your booking confirmation/appointment reminder, you may see a “Manage My Appointment” button. Please note that clicking this button will NOT allow you to cancel or reschedule, you must contact us, and we will be happy to get your appointment rescheduled if you’d like!

What if I am running late to my appointment?

If you are running late to your appointment, please call the studio at 814-933-5030 before your appointment to let us know if you are running late.

If you are going to be late by more than 15 minutes, we may need to reschedule your appointment, as we are typically booked back-to-back. Out of respect for us and our other clients, please give yourself adequate time to travel to your appointment and park so you can be on time.

What is your pricing policy?

The prices listed for our services are non-negotiable and subject to change.

All deposits are non-refundable and go toward total service cost.

If you decide you do not want to proceed with the service after paying your deposit, please note that we will not be able to refund your deposit.
Please see our cancellation/reschedule/no show policy for deposit information in the case of cancellation/reschedule/no show.

While we take your permanent makeup service seriously and always aim for you to be happy with your results, permanent makeup results and client satisfaction cannot be guaranteed, and therefore any money paid for your service is non-refundable.

Do I have to be 18 years old to get permanent makeup?

Yes, we require a minimum age of 18 years old to get PMU at our studio.  You must provide a valid photo ID before we will perform any PMU service on you.

Can I get permanent makeup if I am pregnant or nursing?

In order to ensure the safety of mama and baby, we cannot perform permanent makeup on you if you are currently pregnant or nursing.

What is the difference between nanobrows and powder brows?

Nano brows is a technique of implanting pigment into the skin to give the look of individual hair strokes.  Powder Brows is a technique of implanting pigment into the skin to give the look of shaded, filled-in brow.  Both techniques are done using a tattoo machine, and both techniques can produce a soft, natural-looking result.

If you’ve heard of microblading, nano brows are the updated version of this. The advantage of nano brows over microblading is that it is less traumatic to the skin, more precise, tolerated by a wider range of skin types, and tends to blur less over time as the hair strokes are more soft and pixelated (therefore depositing less pigment).

If you don't have much brow hair but like the look of hair strokes, you may need a combo brow, which is a combination of nano brow hair strokes and powder brow shading, to help give you definition.

At your consultation, our artist will determine which procedure type would best suit you, with regards to your goals, your skin type, your existing brows, and their artistic expertise.

What if I just got filler or botox?

You must wait one month after getting fillers or botox to get permanent makeup, and wait one month after permanent makeup before getting botox or fillers.  This is to ensure your fillers and botox have settled, and that any injection site has healed, and to ensure your permanent makeup has healed before introducing an injection from botox or fillers.  Please note, that if you are in-between your first and second session of permanent makeup, we recommend waiting until one month after your second session to receive botox or fillers.

If you are wondering whether you should get lip filler before or after getting lip blush, the short answer is, either one is fine to get first. But if we had to choose, we recommend getting the lip filler first, because getting filler after lip blush can stretch the skin and make your lip blush appear less saturated.

Will permanent makeup brows replace me having to do my brow makeup?

In some cases, yes, in some cases, no. Permanent makeup is never going to look as bold as regular makeup. Regular makeup sits on top of the skin, whereas permanent makeup pigment sits in the skin. Permanent makeup pigment lies in the dermis layer, which means once healed, there is another layer of skin over it (the epidermis -- the outermost layer of skin that naturally sheds every 1-2 months). Because of this, permanent makeup is seen through a "filter," and appears softer than a regular topical makeup.

If you normally do your brow makeup lightly and are aiming for a soft, natural look, then permanent makeup might replace your brow makeup. If you normally like your brows to be dark and bold, then permanent makeup brows might NOT replace the look you are going for. However, permanent makeup can still be helpful in this case, because it can provide a template for you to simply apply your makeup on top of, instead of guessing where to draw your brows each day.

Achieving a dark and bold brow look with permanent makeup is not what is in your best interest in the long-term. The warm tones of brow pigment typically fade faster than the cool tones, and so brows that are oversaturated with pigment end up looking ashy yet still saturated over time. When this happens, the brows cannot be touched up in the long-term, and instead some of that pigment will need to be removed via laser removal or saline lightening before getting them refreshed and looking good again.

At Mae Belle Beauty, our goal is always natural versus too saturated and bold, as we have your best interests in the long term and would always prefer for you to come back with your brows faded than for them to be oversaturated and have only removal or lightening as your option.

Is permanent makeup permanent or semi-permanent?

PMU is a permanent procedure.  However, it is common for PMU to fade over time, and clients typically desire a touch-up every 1-3 years.  The amount your PMU may fade is unpredictable to the artist, and depends on a variety of factors unique to you, including skin anatomy, your lifestyle, medications, or medical conditions.  It may fade significantly over time, or only slightly.

What is the healing process like?

In general, during the healing process your PMU will go through stages.  At first, it will be essentially an open wound that you must take care to protect.  Like a normal wound, it will then get dry and you may experience scabbing/peeling, followed by a new layer of skin that forms.  During this stage, your PMU may look like it has "disappeared," however, once the new layer of skin normalizes the pigment may reemerge.

The aftercare instructions you will be provided with are designed to minimize the scabbing/peeling, and help with pigment retention.  Please visit our "aftercare" page for more detailed information about the healing process and instructions.

How do I care for my permanent makeup in the long-term?

Sun exposure, retinols, and any other chemical exfoliators can cause your PMU to fade prematurely, so we recommend avoiding tanning beds, wearing sunscreen daily on your PMU, and avoiding retinols or chemical exfoliators on your PMU indefinitely.  If you are going to be in the sun all day, we also recommend a hat or visor to shade your face from the sun.

Where do I park for my appointment?

There is metered parking right on Spring St and High St outside of the studio.  Meters are checked Monday through Friday, 8am to 8pm and Saturdays 9am-12pm. Sundays are free. All meters accept Quarters and Credit Cards. There is a two-hour time limit on the meters.

There is also a municipal lot on Spring St across from the studio where the Waffle Shop is.

Three pay kiosks are in the parking lot. 50 cents = 30 minutes and $1.00 = one hour. There is no max time for the lot. The lot includes two charging stations and two handicap spots.

For more information about parking, please visit the Bellefonte Borough parking page here.
